07:21 pm - Friends Only

Hi.

This LJ is pretty much Friends Only at this point. Comment if you want to come into my (not very exciting, I promise...) online life.

12:36 pm - I need your blood...

Okay, I don't need your blood. But my sister, Erin, does.

She has a really rare and aggressive form of leukemia, and has been undergoing treatment since February, waiting for a bone marrow donor. Remarkably, a perfect 10/10 donor match has been found, and she gets her transplant on Thursday, July 21st. It will be her 40th birthday. (And her baby, Eliott, will be 18 months old the next day.)

She's going to need a lot of blood during her recovery. My sister-in-law Naomi has organized a blood drive in our home town of Claremont, in Southern California, on Wednesday, July 20th. The City of Hope van will be there from 1:30pm to 6:00pm, at 262 W. Second Street (in front of Lizzies Goldmine) in Claremont. Whatever Erin can't use will, of course, be used by some other patient at COH.

Here's the facebook event link:

If you can, please do. I'll buy you Afghan fries at Walter's.

05:53 am - Another Request / Info about Paypal

Hello, LJ  --

Another request, related to my sister's illness. She's had to go on leave from her job, and there's a gap between when her sick pay ends and her long term disability kicks in. There are also tons of other expenses, and there's some conversation among her family and friends about donations.

I know that lots of people have used Paypal for donation drives and related kinds of stuff. I'm not being my smartest self these days, and can't find some of the handy-dandy information on what to do and what not to do when it comes to using Paypal for this kind of donation drive.

If you know this info or can point me to where I can find it, would you, please? Here or off-line, as needed -- the email is robinsweeney at gmail dot com.

Much appreciated, and in my teeny, tiny pay-LJ back fashion, I will now go and make at least three comments on people's posts.

05:18 pm - Thank you, LJ...

Hey, LJ, thanks for the input about possible air travel solutions for my sister.

I *think* we have a solution, although everything is kind of up in the air. (Ha. Plane jokes.) The working plan, now, is to work with one of the charities (the corporate jet one, I do believe) on having a possible flight, with commercial reservations as a back-up plan. There have been some great suggestions about how to handle traveling as an immune compromised person, although I welcome any/more, if people have them.

Now all they have to do is get the insurance company to play nice and get her scheduled, but one way or another, it looks like she'll end up getting treatment at City of Hope.

I'll likely actually start posting a little bit about this, but it may primarily be friends-locked, due to privacy kinds of concerns.

Thanks again for the support and input, everyone.

06:48 pm - Asking for help

Do you have access to a private plane? Do you know anyone who does?

My sister is sick -- really sick. She has a rare and fast-moving type of leukemia, and needs a bone marrow transplant as soon as possible. The good news is that the specialist who (literally) wrote the book on bone marrow transplants has agreed to take her case. The challenging part is we need to find a way to get my sister from Virginia to City of Hope, in Southern California. This may need to happen pretty soon, possibly within the week.

She may be able to take a commercial flight. This is a big risk for her, since she is at a significant risk for infection.

I'm turning to LiveJournal to see if anyone has a private plan, or has access to one, or good suggestions or ideas about getting her to City of Hope.

Getting her there and getting the bone marrow transplant is likely her best chance. She and her husband just celebrated their 9th anniversary. Her baby turned 1 at the end of January. And I'm really scared and worried.

If you can help,  know of someone who can,  or have any good suggestions, please be in touch with me directly. Boost the signal if you can, and feel free to email me at robinsweeney at gmail dot com.

12:38 am - Just popping in to say hello...

LJ is going under a great big shift, isn't it? I'm on Facebook, but don't use it very much and don't trust it very much. (Robin Sweeney over there, if you're interested.) I also have a Twitter account, but loathe the Twitter and all it stands for, but felt compelled to sit on my own name.

I still much prefer LJ, and have/had hopes for DW, but my use and need for this kind of social networking/blogging is still sort of in flux. As part of that flux, I've made a few minor nips to the FL, and if you've been nipped and don't wish to be, please let me know.
